Why everyone loves a meal shared among friends
The last half of the Mass involves a meal among friends, a “sacred meal” where we are fed with the Body and Blood of Jesus, and are joined to God in communion.
The Eucharist follows the Biblical pattern of a “sacred banquet,” which occurs in many places in both the Old and the New Testament:
Adam and Eve enjoying the abundance of the Garden
The Passover meal in Egypt
Jesus’ multiplication of the loaves and the fishes
The Last Supper that Jesus had with his friends
Watch this short video to see how God satisfies our spiritual hunger:
How does the miracle of the loaves and fishes show that if we give our gifts back to God, they will increase a hundredfold? Are you holding on tightly to any of your gifts, worrying that they will disappear? How can you start to give more away?
What, according to Bishop Barron, is the significance of the baby Jesus being placed in the manger? How does this relate to the Last Supper and to the Eucharist?
Bishop Barron says that “the world, in its entirety, is constantly being loved into existence by God.” How can this idea affect your attitude and behavior each day, both in the way you treat yourself and how you treat others?
